Hey everyone! I'm excited to get to contribute a block to the quilt along this summer. Be sure to check out my YouTube channel to see a little overview of how this block comes together. It's easier then it looks! Alright, let's get to it.
This post is part of our summer quilt-along series. Find the rest of the posts by clicking {here}.
This block has a bonus 6" version, too!
6" BLOCK | 12" BLOCK | |
---|---|---|
Blue Fabric | 1 strip 2" x 15" | 1 strip 3" x 22" |
Red Fabric |
1 strip 2" x 15" |
1 strip 3" x 22" |
Neutral Fabric |
2 strips 2" x 15" 2 strips 1" x 6" 2 strips 1" x 7" |
2 strips 3" x 22" 2 strips 1.75" x 10" 2 strips 1.75" x 12.5" |
Square ruler with a 45 degree line on it.
Rotating cutting mat.
1 - Sew the long strips together in the following order: white, red, blue, white. Press all the seams towards the left.
2- Sub-cut the sewn strip into four units. For the 12" block, cut at 5.5" intervals. For the 6" block, cut at 3.5" intervals.
3- Take one unit and a square ruler. Align the 45 degree marking with the center seam on your unit and align the corner of the ruler with the top edge of your piece. Trim to create triangles as shown. Repeat with all 4 units. *Note: be sure that you consistently trim the same side of the unit. For instance, all of my pieces had the blue fabric on the right of the 45 degree line.
4- Sew the units into two pairs and press the center seam in opposing directions to prepare for nesting.
5- Sew the two halves together. Press this center seam open. For the 12" block: square up to 10" x 10". For the 6" block: square up to 6" x 6".
6- You should have 4 white strips remaining. Sew the two shorter white strips onto two parallel sides and press the seams open.
7- Sew the last two white strips to the remaining parallel sides and press the seams open.
8 - If you are making the 12" block: square up to 12.5" x 12.5". If you are making the 6" block: square up to 6.5" x 6.5".
I've loved being part of this seashore quilt along. Our family lived in San Diego last year, and just moved out of state a few months ago. And while I'm really happy to be in a single family home instead of a tiny apartment...I can't help but romanticize our time there. We lived 30 minutes from amazing beaches. Sigh. If we can't go to the beach today, at least we can all sew with it in mind. Happy Quilting!
