Moda Spell It With Fabric!
Moda Spell It With Fabric!
We loved these blocks and quilts so much the first time that we've been itching and scratching to do it again. The time is now!
No matter what you spell, or which alternate blocks you choose, the Moda Spell it with Fabric blocks and quilts are fun to make, and there is so much variety! They’re also fabric-friendly as you can use a Jelly Roll for pre-cut 2.5″ strips, or cut your own strips from a Layer Cake, fat eighth, fat quarter or your scraps.
Of course we're partial to Jelly Rolls - easy peasy, right?
We're using the Spell it with Fabric booklet - ask at your favorite quilt shop or look online for shops that carry it. While the block instructions can be found online, the booklet includes everything you need in one place, and a few extras.
There are general fabric requirements, cutting instructions, the techniques used, hints and tips, more than a dozen alternate blocks, a basic layout and assembly instructions and... all twenty-six letters. In one place. Ready to use to cut. sew. press. and repeat.
We first did this at Fall Market in 2013, and the Moda designers shared their quilts in early 2014.
This is by Sandy Klop of American Jane. Using a glorious mix of "pezzy prints", lettered fabrics and panels, she made this amazing quilt. Check out the narrow outer border made with her multi-color ruler print.
Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms and Bonnie & Camille put a very scrappy spin on her quilt - we love the different border fabrics and the scrappy binding.
Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique - she created this for the Moda Bake Shop.
I don't have a picture of the whole quilt but it says... When Life Is Scrappy > Make a Quilt. It's scrappy and wonderful.
Mini Alphabet? Moda Designer Lisa Bongean has a Mini Alphabet pattern that makes a 42" x 42" small quilt. The pattern is by Primitive Gatherings - PRI 442 - Mini Alphabet.
There are a couple of tools we like to make the cutting and piecing a bit easier. They are:
- Antler Quilt Designs Mini Simple Folded Corners ruler or Simple Folded Corners ruler - the instructions for many of the blocks use folded/connector corners. The Studio 180 Corner Pop ruler is another option.
- Omnigrid 4" x 14" ruler - or a similar-size ruler as the narrower width makes this ruler easy to handle when trimming Jelly Roll strips.
If you're joining us to Spell it with Fabric, be sure to share your progress on Instagram and Facebook with the hashtag - #spellitwithmoda! (There is also inspiration on #spellitwithfabric.)
So what are you going to "say" with your quilt?
