MMQAL- Week 10

MMQAL- Week 10

Here we are back again for Week 10  of the Midnight Moon QAL.

This week's blocks are Southern Star and Checkerboard.

MMQAL southern Star

Southern Star

We constantly study how older blocks are made and if we can do them more manageable.

This star is traditionally made with diamond shapes and y-seams.

Today we use HST (half-square triangles) to create the same look but easier and with no set-in seams.

MMQAL Checkerboard

Checkerboard – This block could be constructed with squares and outer triangles, which leads to bias edges, so while this is not the fastest way to make this block, it is easy repetitive sewing.

Using paper for the square in a square unit is handy when trying to match the points. We used the It's Sew Emma 1 1/2" size, as shown in the video below. You will get hooked on the accuracy, and there are many sizes of foundation papers available.

It’s always fun to learn new tricks, so Tammy wanted to share how she used the Square in a Square foundation paper by It's Sew Emma.

Another tool you may want to add to your sewing toolbox is the Add-A Quarter Plus.

Enjoy!

See you next week- Same Bat-time, Same Bat-channel!
