At the Seashore - Cruising the Outer Banks
Hi, Bake Shoppers! I'm Carole Carter and I blog at From My Carolina Home. I am delighted to be back for the At the Seashore Quilt Along! Living in North Carolina, our summer fun at the shore might include a visit to the Outer Banks. So, my block is Cruising the Outer Banks. Come dip your toes in the water and make this fun sailboat design which is a perfect addition to a summer fun quilt along. My block is made with Moda's Origami Janet Clare.
This post is part of our summer quilt-along series. Find the rest of the posts by clicking {here}.
For a 12-inch Block - I've noted the fabrics I used, but feel free to substitute your choice of Moda fabrics and colors.
- Light background - Origami Pleat Pale Grey (FABRIC A)
3-1/2-inch squares - 4
4-inch squares - 3
4-1/2-inch square - 1 - Grey Sail - Plum Blossom Pale Grey (FABRIC B)
3-1/2-inch squares - 1
4-inch squares - 1 - Navy Boat - Moda Origami Crane Indigo (FABRIC C)
3-1/2-inch squares - 2
4-inch squares - 1 - Red flag square (red Bella Solid) - 4-1/2 inch square - 1 (FABRIC D)
- Teal Blue Sea - one strip 3-1/2" x 12-1/2" - Origami Dot Teal (FABRIC E)
Step 1 - Make the quarter square triangle for the flag. Pair the red 4-1/2 inch square with the background light 4-1/2 inch square. Draw two diagonal lines on the backside of the white from one corner to the opposite corner 1/4 inch away from the center. Place squares right sides together, sew on the lines on both sides. Cut apart and press to the dark. Square up to 4-inches. Set one aside for later use. Use one half-square triangle to pair with a 4-inch light background square. Draw diagonal lines on the light background square as before, and pair with the half square triangle unit, right sides together, with the seam on the HST running perpendicular to the lines on the light square.
Sew on the line on both sides. Cut apart and press to the light side. You'll have two, one to use now and one for a second block later.
Step 2 - Make the half square triangles. Draw lines on the remaining two 4-inch light squares as before. Pair up one with the 4-inch grey and one with the 4-inch navy. Sew on the lines on both sides of both pairs. Cut apart and press to the dark.
Step 3 Assemble block - Arrange the quarter square unit, the HSTs and the remaining 3-1/2 squares according to the diagram. Sew the elements in the top three rows in pairs, chain stitching as much as possible.
Then sew rows. Press rows 1 and 3 opposite row 2 to allow nesting. Sew the rows together. Add the teal blue strip for water at the bottom.
This block finishes at 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" at this stage, and 12-inches square fully finished in a quilt.
Quick and easy! This is a fun block and I love the Origami fabric group. I hope you enjoy the quilt along At The Seashore, and stay tuned for more fun blocks!
