Books and a Birthday...
Books and a Birthday...
As much as I love e-books and audio books, I still love having an actual paper-and-ink book in my hands. And on my shelves.
No, these are not all mine. A few of these shelves and books can be found elsewhere in the building.
Lots of shelves full of books doesn't keep us from looking at - and wanting - new books. Just like fabric, shoes, handbags, jewelry, dishes and a big long list of other things, having one doesn't mean you don't still "need" others. So here are a few of the books that have caught our - okay, my - attention this past month.
All are available now or in the next couple of weeks.
This book debuted at Quilt Market in Houston - 12 Pack Quilts from Barbara Groves and Mary Jacobson, aka Me & My Sister Designs.
Barb and Mary are known for fast, fun and easy designs that both beginning and experienced quilters love. There are a dozen designs that will work with any style of fabric - there are even alternate suggestions included.
The Quilter's Year Book - we're still waiting to receive copies in the warehouse but ever since seeing it at Market, it's been on my Gift list - for a couple of friends and for me.
The book is the result of the late-night random thoughts and "what ifs" of Susanne Woods - the genius publisher and founder of Lucky Spool Media.
Described as a funny interactive journal that lets you create and record your ideas, and challenge yourself and spark your creativity. It's coming this month - December.
I also loved this Lucky Spool book by Jacquie Gering. It is available now.
WALK - Master Machine Quilting with Your Walking Foot. Starting with the basics of a walking foot, preparing and marking projects for quilting, and how to manage every size of project, Jacquie then teaches over sixty walking foot friendly designs that include channel quilting, matchstick quilting and decorative stitches. There are traditional curved designs like cables, clamshells and orange peels, and well as point-to-point designs like nested diamonds.
If you're not familiar with Jacquie's name, she is a spectacularly talented and skilled modern quilter. She's also a great speaker and teacher - something that comes through in the book. I've read it and look forward to going through it again, both to read and to use as a workbook to improve my machine-quilting.
Another book we've been waiting for - especially me - is Edyta Sitar's Little Handful of Scraps.
This wall. 'Nuff said, right?
Edyta's Little Handful of Scraps has started shipping so it should be in your favorite quilt shop in the next week or so.
Jen Kingwell's Long Time Gone is her latest quilt. While it was originally done as a Block of the Month, the book lets you do it as a Make It All At Once.
I will be in the Make It All At Once... Eventually group. (As in... I signed up for the Block of the Month and have done a spectacularly good job at keeping all the kits together.)
Or I could just pretend this is mine.
The last book to share today is I Love Churn Dashes!
And yes, I do love Churn Dash blocks.
This is another terrific compilation book featuring Churn Dash quilts from talented designers - Christa Watson, Kari M. Carr, Carol Hopkins, Kim Diehl, Kate Henderson, Jackie White, Laura Boehnke, Tonya Alexander, Kim Brackett, Gina Reddin and Kimberly Jolly.
And Amy Ellis, Jo Morton and April Rosenthal.
The adorable little quilt in the bottom-left corner is Sweet Cream by Kimberly Jolly. (I think I might need a bigger version of this quilt.)
And this is where I get to the birthday in the title - the other contributor to I Love Churn Dashes is our own Tammy Vonderschmitt. I don't think there are many blocks Tammy doesn't love - as long as she can make them small and scrappy, she's happy.
This is her Scrap Bin Runner.
And yes, today is Tammy's birthday.
Because a birthday always needs cake, Tammy picked a couple of her favorite Layer Cakes for a giveaway. She's also going to share a signed copy of I Love Churn Dashes! and since you're going need a few half-triangle squares to make all these the Churn Dash blocks, we're also including a Bloc-Loc Half-Triangle Square ruler.
Just leave a comment by Midnight on Sunday, December 11th telling us if you have any quilt books on your Christmas-holiday wish list and you're entered to win.
Happy Tuesday!
